what is a microprocessor? 5 types of microprocessors (GPP and ASP) | All details.
What is a microprocessor?
A mini electronic device that controls all the circuit functions that are necessary to run a computer. Basically, it is the central processing unit of any computer or smartphone. the microprocessor is like the bunch of all the system functions that are required to operate a system. the microprocessor contains CPU, GPU, etc. in a single chipset. We have explained:
- Microprocessor vs processor
- Microprocessor examples
- Types of microprocessor
- Microprocessor history
- Difference between microprocessor and microcontroller
1. Microprocessor vs processor
the processor is just a system operator that operates the system as a brain of the system but the microprocessor is more than that.
Microprocessor
- processor
- graphics processing unit
- circuitry requirements
Actually, a microprocessor contains the processor (operates arithmetic and logical functions), GPU and has all the circuitry operations. Technology is so advanced these days that in smartphones and computers also, processors are said to be as fast as they are smaller in size because, in a small processor, transistors take less power to switch. but large processors takes more energy to run. So,
small the processor,
faster the processor.
But, the size of the microprocessor does not affect the speed of the system. unless its circuits are too large.
2. Microprocessor examples
Intel 4004 was the first microprocessor to be used in computers.
some more examples of microprocessors:
- Intel Pentium
- Intel i (series)
- AMD Athlon
Now, If you are thinking that these are processors and not microprocessors, then also, you are right, these days these are called processors, but the technical term for these is - microprocessors.
3. Types of microprocessors
there are basically two types of microprocessor
- GPP - general-purpose processor
- ASP - application-specific processor
1. GPP - general-purpose processor
general-purpose microprocessors are just for casual use/normal use, which is not made specifically or some certain work.
GPP is further of two types:
- GPP proper (general purpose applications)
- Microcontrollers (industrial application)
microcontrollers:
the microcontroller is a simple controller over a single metal oxide semiconductor. these are very basic processors specially made for industrial use. these microprocessors contain a small memory space also because, in industrial use, there is no need, a big space of memory.
2. ASP - application-specific processor
these types of processors are specifically made for some applications, like coding, rendering, or any other type of application that takes a lot of processing power to operate smoothly. there are further three types of ASP
- DSP - digital signal processor
- ASIP - application-specific instruction set processor
- ASIC - application-specific integrated processor
1. DSP
these types of processors take real-world data like temperature, pressure, audio, video, etc, and mathematically manipulates them accordingly.
2. ASIP
Programmable microprocessors where hardware and instruction are designed for a specific application.
3. ASIC
these types of processors are completely integrated into hardware.
4. Microprocessor history
basically, microprocessors are the latest types of processors, in previous times all the units were different. like, GPU, CPU, etc were differently placed in the system. But as microprocessors is a single unit that contains all the components together as a single unit. which not only made the processing faster but is also energy efficient.
In January 1997, the first microprocessor was made for a Japanese calculator.
5. Difference between microprocessor and microcontroller
some people are confused between microprocessors and microcontrollers, because of the microcontroller's name. but basically, a microcontroller is a type of microprocessor. and the microprocessor is a big term of 5 types.
Conclusion
microprocessors are just a unit that contains all the circuit and processing chips together.
